Closed for renovation in 2018, iconic McGovern’s Tavern, at 55-60 New Street in downtown Newark, has finally re-opened. Essex Catholic alumni, faculty and friends have been gathering at McGovern’s, owned by Sean McGovern ’84, for the All-Classes Reunion for many years. On Saturday, April 24, the Foundation will be at the place where “In God We Trust. All Others Pay.” Our event starts at 3:00 PM.

Opened in 1936, McGovern’s Tavern is one of the oldest Irish Pubs in New Jersey. It started with the idea of having a place where the Irish community could socialize and partake in some Irish music and dancing. It quickly became an institution. Today you won’t find a more eclectic mix of individuals sharing a pint and a laugh together at the end of a long day at work or school. Whether you work in the area, are going to school there or are just visiting, you’re sure to feel at home. “Fáilte roimh chách!” in Gaelic, or in Irish, “All are welcome!”

Only $30 per person at the door.

The Class of 1984 got together in September 2020 at newly renovated McGovern’s Tavern.
