Time: 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join your fellow Essex Catholic alumni at newly rebuilt, iconic McGovern’s Tavern for our annual All-Classes Reunion in the near future. THIS EVENT WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 25, BUT DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. CHECK BACK HERE FOR A NEW DATE.
Owned and operated by Sean McGovern ’84, McGovern’s, located at 58-60 New Street in downtown Newark, is home to Essex Catholic Eagles athletic trophies and plaques awarded over the school’s 47-year history. $25 donation at the door.
Conveniently located near Newark Penn Station and Rutgers Law School, the bar serves pints of Guinness and the Dublin Decker — a corned beef, turkey, Swiss cheese and coleslaw sandwich topped with Russian dressing on rye bread. The Daily Meal named McGovern’s Tavern one of the best bars in America. Established in 1936 by Frank McGovern, this Newark landmark originally served as a meeting place for Irish immigrants. It also survived the 1967 Newark Riots, which led to the closure of many local businesses.
